I Don’t Want To Work Anymore: What Can I do ?

What can we do when we don’t want to work anymore?

A lot of people go through times when they feel unmotivated, no desire to work.

That is completely understandable, especially if your field of work is something that you are not interested in but just use it as a means to make money.

You could just take a sick day and get away with it, use a vacation day or two and refresh your mind.

Because deep down you know you have to work to make money because there are bills to be paid!

First, think about what your goal is?

Is it time freedom? Is it becoming your own boss?

Regardless, the best thing to do would be to find a job that you love and are passionate about.

Some ways to make money but doesn’t feel like a job.

In this blog post, we are going to talk in detail, what steps will you be able to take if you don’t want to work anymore.

Getting Over Work Apathy

According to Research Gate,

job apathy is defined as a state of diminished motivation and affect toward one’s. job. An individual high in job apathy has low emotional attachment to their job and organization, coupled with a low level of motivation related to thinking about and performing their job and related.

Not wanting to work anymore is a totally normal feeling.

Especially on days when you’re exhausted and in no mood to work, this may be a temporary feeling, maybe you’re just in a rut.

Here are a few ways to get over work apathy and maybe regain your interest in wanting to work:

Have A Conversation With Your Boss

If you have any issues in the workplace, these problems might be able to be solved by simply having a conversation with your manager/boss.

If you’re a good employee, you might find yourself shocked to the lengths your company would go to keep you.

They say “you can’t win the lottery, if you don’t buy a ticket” and this is a prime example of that, how will you know if your work life can get easier without having that conversation?

Take A Break To Recuperate

You might feel the pressure of always being a great employee, never taking a sick day, never taking a vacation day.

All to give the impression that you are “the model employee”, but this can lead to burnout extremely quickly.

And, your interest at your job can fade even quicker.

Taking a vacation and just enjoying yourself, not thinking about anything work-related could be the answer to all your problems.

Find Another Job

Maybe it’s not external factors, but you just don’t enjoy where you’re working and what you’re working as.

The worst thing you could possibly do is to stay at a job that you hate.

We all need money though! So instead of quitting first, try and search for another job and apply.

Don’t stay miserable just for the sake of money, but at the same time lets not be hasty and just quit before having something else lined up that can supplement your life.

not wanting to work is a normal feeling that most people go through

Why Do We Not Want To Work

There are a lot of reasons why you might not want to work anymore.

It could be because you don’t feel like your current job is engaging enough, hence you go into work everyday and are just bored most of the time.

Maybe the organization that you work for hasn’t been transparent with your career path and advancement opportunities.

It could also be you’re just sick of being an employee and want to work towards becoming self-employed.

Not Enjoying Yourself

Are you waking up in the morning thinking to yourself, “Ugh, I just can’t be bothered going into work today” ?

If you aren’t enjoying your job, this feeling can get more intense over time.

Majority of people who don’t want to work feel like there is no sense of enjoyment in their work and hence feel like their work has no meaning.

If you find yourself in this situation, maybe it’s time to hand in that resignation letter and look for greener pastures.

You will have to live frugally for a while and have a good idea on budgeting so you can transition through this phase as smoothly as possible.

Toxic Work Environment

Do you feel like your work environment is not suited to you? Maybe meeting deadlines stresses you out, or your boss micro-manages you so much that you have no freedom.

I hope this isn’t happening to you but things like bullying, harassment and ostracism still exist in work environments today.

If these things happen to you, it’s no wonder that you dread going to work every week.

Finding a new place to work might be the fix that you need that will allow you to be happy waking up on a Monday morning instead of dreading the feeling.

Burn Out

Burnout is when an employee starts to get exhausted and that leads to the feeling of being sick of your job.

It negatively affects that morale of the employee and in turn negatively impacts the entire work environment of the organization as well.

If you are experiencing burn out, quitting might not always be the best solution since burnout occurs in every job.

Maybe taking a vacation and just being away from work for a few days/ weeks could help alleviate your feeling of burnout.

Personal Life Issues

It should be quite obvious that your personal life impacts job performance. Since job performance is affected by how you feel.

Stress, pain and other emotions leak over from one part of your life to another, this is all natural.

If there are things in your personal life that are affecting your job performance, consider talking to your boss about it.

If you feel like that won’t help, get your needs met by a professional or take some time off to deal with those personal issues before going back to work.

Health Issues

Naturally, when you’re healthier it’s going to make work a hell of a lot easier.

Bad health tends to make you feel slow, lethargic and just unmotivated in general.

In order to keep yourself running at optimum efficiency you need to make sure that you are in good health.

Keeping fit and healthy can also open up new avenues and help you develop new routines.

Going to the gym, eating healthy for cheap can all be new hobbies that you take up. This can help prevent burnout and give you more things to look forward to.

Keep in mind, what works for one person will not work for everyone. You need to figure out what is best for your own performance and happiness.

Your energy while you’re working is generally a good indicator of what is working and what isn’t.

health issues could be a factor for not wanting to work

Is This A Normal Feeling?

I think everyone at some stage in their lives has thought ” Ugh, I just don’t want to work anymore”.

It’s normal to feel this way, especially if you do not enjoy your manager, your co-workers or the work culture of the organization that you’re in.

Maybe you don’t want to work anymore not because you hate your job, but because you want to achieve financial freedom by becoming self employed.

That makes it harder to go to work everyday because you have different goals compared to what you are doing to make a living.

On the other hand, maybe you’re in your 20s or 30s and thinking how you can never make it until 65 and retire in the job that you’re in.

Can I Even Survive Without Working?

If you don’t want to work anymore, you need to think to yourself if you can survive without working.

That completely depends on your financial situation.

If you’re a trust fund baby or you come from money, then you’re likely not going to put yourself at risk by choosing to not work anymore.

However, if you’re like most people, you may have an emergency fund set up and can survive for a little while without working.

But it’s most likely not going to be a long term solution.

Collecting unemployment benefits could give you a bit of extra cash but it’s likely not enough to make ends meet.

Learning how to Live on Less Money could prolong your journey but again, it’s very likely that it’s not going to be a long term solution.

surviving without working depends on how much cash you have saved

How Else Can I Make A Living?

If you are serious about not working anymore, you still need to find a way to make a living.

Finding jobs where you can work from home can provide you with some flexibility and earn you some extra cash during difficult times.

The name of the game is passive income.

Building a portfolio in stocks, real estate or any other appreciating asset can help you get closer to not working anymore.

Unless you already have a substantial amount of money already saved, for most people giving up on work is just not sustainable in the long run.

You need to make sure that you have other streams of income which isn’t a paycheck.

4 Easy Steps To Quit Your Job

1) Save Money

This might seem obvious! But you need to have money saved to cover your bills and unavoidable expenses. There’s no way around it.

Try the 100 envelope money challenge to kick start your savings journey.

Even changing your spending habits by spending less on groceries or embracing frugality can accelerate your savings.

You might have heard that the earlier you start investing the better.

Maybe you think “pssht, I’m not young anymore so what’s the point” but that isn’t right!

Starting a little later is still better than not starting at all!

2) Drastically Reduce Your Expenses

Now that we have covered saving money for unavoidable expenses.

We need to talk about how to reduce the avoidable ones. You have to learn to live below your means after you decide to quit your job.

Learning how to be stingy is a great tool to add to your skill set. It helps you differentiate between money that you have to spend and money that you might be wasting.

reducing expenses wherever you can will help you survive longer

3) Start Planning Your Exit

You need to start formulating a plan on how you’re going to support yourself when you don’t have a consistent income.

Do you have money invested in real estate, stocks or funds?

One of the few things you will realize is that in order to make money without a job, you need to have money in hand.

Sounds like a loop! And sadly that’s exactly what is.

Make sure to keep a positive mindset and not get bogged down when you get caught in this cycle.

You can use Money Mantras to help get you in a better frame of mind to manifest money and achieve your financial goals.

4) Time To Pick A Date!

As with any goal, you need to decide on a date on when you want to put your plan into action.

If you’ve made it this far chances are that you are so dissatisfied with your job and just want to leave, it’s now time to find a date to move on to better pastures.

There are some jobs that require a one month or even a three month notice. Make sure to take this into account when you pick your date.

Companies do this to give them enough time to source a replacement for you once you leave and they might require you to train the new person they hire.

Whatever happens, as long as you go into it with an open mind and a good heart you leave yourself with very little room to be upset later.

Don’t worry too much, you’ll get through this and it will all be okay before you know it.

I believe in you no matter what you choose!
